easter craft 1906

Craft some quick, easy and super cute Easter friends with crepe paper rolls!

Supplies
Sheet of card stock or cereal box
Crepe paper roll(s) in desired color(s)
Small scraps of colored paper
Yarn, buttons, feathers, googly eyes (optional)
Glue stick or double-sided tape
White glue
Pencil
Scissors

Directions

  1. Draw an egg shape (about 6 inches tall) onto card stock or cereal box cardboard. Cut out the egg shape.
  2. Use a glue stick or double-sided tape to completely cover one side of the egg, all the way to the edges.
  3. Cut about 10 pieces of crepe paper, each as long as the egg width (about 5 inches). Fold each length of crepe paper in half, lengthwise.
  4. Cut fringe into each folded strip, starting at the open bottom and stopping short of the folded edge.
  5. Starting at the bottom of the egg, lay one fringed strip at a time horizontally onto the adhesive, overlapping each one a little bit.
  6. When the entire egg is covered, turn it over and cut away the excess crepe paper around the egg.
  7. Turn the egg face up and use dots of glue to add small bits of crepe paper to any spots missing fringe (if needed).
  8. Optional: Turn decorated egg into a bunny or chick by cutting features from paper and attaching with small amounts of white glue. Yarn, googly eyes, buttons, feathers, pom-poms and other craft scraps can be used, too.

  9. Make as many eggs or animals as desired for Easter decorations; or use them to make greeting cards, garlands or banners or to embellish the front of Easter baskets and party hats.

More tips and ideas:

  • Many colors of crepe paper rolls are available inexpensively at dollar stores, party stores and craft stores.
  • For the most finished look, cut the egg shape from card stock that is the same color as the crepe paper.
  • Instead of crepe paper rolls, create fringed strips from paper, tissue, felt, fabric, wide gift ribbon or sheets of craft foam.
  • To dress the animals festivley, add bow-ties, hats, glasses or vests.
  • To make a garland, banner or bunting, make many decorated eggs and connect them with string, yarn, ribbon or lengths of the crepe paper roll.
  • Add letters to the eggs to make name tags or a sign that reads “Happy Easter.”
  • Make really big versions to decorate doors and make impressive table centerpieces.
  • For more general Spring decorations, try this project with simple flower shapes instead.
  • Decorate both sides of several eggs and make a hanging mobile with them.
  • Change the paper shape to make decorations for other seasons and holidays: hearts for Valentines Day, stars for the 4th of July, ghosts and pumpkins for Halloween, leaves for fall and Thanksgiving, a Christmas tree or cross for Christmas, the Star of David for Hannukah, etc.
